DAVID RICKY QUARTET
The David Ricky Quartet was born after David Woolfson approached his old army buddy, Tony Drake, to record some songs his father had written many years ago.
They followed up by recording an album of 'standards', and, after the album was spotted and favoured by some record labels, David and Tony decided to put an ensemble around the setlist, and secured the musical services of Colin Brown on upright bass, and Johnny Baatjes on drums.
David has plenty of experience in the entertainment industry, having done his fair share of cabaret work, and having run the 'Turn and Tender' restaurant in Pretoria in the '80's, which hosted a weekly jazz program for SABC television.
Tony is a veteran pianist/keyboardist, has produced many albums, including the David Ricky albums, and worked with a number of other local and international artists, including Rocking Horse, The Glenn Robertson Jazz Band, Andrew Young, Andre De Villiers, PP "Kafunta" Arnold, Heinz Winkler, Najee, and sometimes with Duck Chowles and friends at the Barnyard.
Colin has a day job, but has experience in playing for various gospel bands, ministry and worship teams as bassist and worship leader.
Johnny is another veteran of the SA music scene, having worked the club circuit with many top artists, performing with most of the local jazz legends, including 'Airborne' band in the early 80's before moving to Johannesburg to record an album and join the late Louis Ribiero's band touring the country. Johnny was offered a short-term contract with Sun International's casino resorts for 3 months in Lesotho which ended up being extended for 17 years, later moving to and from hotels in neighbouring countries. He also spent 3years entertaining on cruise liners, doing cabaret or as a drummer.
