Deeply ingrained in the Los Angeles music scene, Miguel Atwood Ferguson has been one of the key people supporting the Brainfeeder family since the label was founded in 2008. He is also a close friend and longtime collaborator of Flying Lotus, the label's founder. Since 2010, he has participated in all four of Flying Lotus' albums, and has also participated in the soundtracks of Blade Runner: Blackout 2022, a Japanese-American co-production short sci-fi anime directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, and the Netflix original anime Yasuke. It is fitting that Miguel, who has played such a vital role in the label for the past 15 years, will release his masterpiece, which took 12 years to complete, on Brainfeeder. Flying Lotus approached Miguel about releasing his work on his own label more than 10 years ago. Regarding releasing his work on Brainfeeder, Miguel said, "I love Los Angeles. I'm proud to be from here, and I want to contribute to Los Angeles."
Les Jardins Mystiques is a project to open up and share Miguel's musical world. It is also a place to showcase Miguel's elegant musicality, who plays various instruments such as violin, viola, cello, and keyboards, and his free-spirited dialogue with more than 50 musicians. The newly released album, Les Jardins Mystiques Vol.1, is the first in a trilogy, running a total of 10.5 hours. The opening track, Kiseki, features legendary musician Beny Maupin, who also played on Miles Davis's masterpiece Bitches Brew, on bass clarinet. The guest musicians include Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, Domi & JD Beck, Jeff Parker, Carlos Niño, Austin Peralta, Lara Somogyi, Jamel Dean, Jamiah Williams, Bernice Travis II, De'Antoni Parks, Brandon Coleman, and Marcus Gilmore. Jardins Mystiques reflects Miguel's philosophy that music is natural, a life force that is uninfluenced by anything. The 52 songs, varying in length and style, have a wonderfully unconstrained flow throughout, while each piece unfolds its own mysterious world.
